WED, AUGUST 24 - CANCELLED PRACTICES
A handful of NDC teams were treated to a spectacular lighting show to the north of Sunnyside last night before being driven off of the water as the storm came closer. For over an hour lightning was striking off in the distance with brilliant ground and building strikes as teams continued to practice. Near 8PM it became too dangerous to continue on and teams were called in and credited for their practices.
After the boats were put away the real show started as the storm moved overhead and produced some fierce wind and rain to go along with the spectacular lightning activity. This photo was taken by ZensLens from the buildings to the west of Sunnside and shows a surreal bolt of lightning striking the water right off Sunnyside.
This is a great opportunity to remind paddlers that lightning in the immediate vicinity will cancel all practices at Sunnyside. If the lightning and thunder are within 10 seconds of one another there are less than 3KM to the strike making paddling unsafe. In this scenario teams are instructed to seek immediate cover at a nearby club or return to Sunnyside if it is safe to do so.
Teams are also reminded that if there is lightning activity of any kind they will be offered a voluntary cancellation wherein they can continue practicing or reschedule for a later date.
Teams are always invited to call our weather information hotline at 416-910-2563 or check back here to see if practices have been cancelled for the evening.
If you have any questions about our weather cancellation policy contact us in the office.

April 28th Storm Update
The windstorm that hit Toronto on April 28th was one of the worst in recent memory. The 100Km/h gusts were especially gruesome on the waterfront for the dragonboats, motorboats and docks.
NDC staff are currently working with our insurers to repair or replace the majority of our boats and on-water equipment,  the hope is to be back to normal operations and fully self sufficient within a month. In the mean-time a HUGE thank you goes out to Great White North Dragon Boat, who generously granted us the use of six BUK dragonboats to assist the club through this ordeal. National Dragonboat Club would also like to thank Pickering Dragon Boat Club and Mississauga Canoe Club for offering their facilities to help provide uninterrupted practice opportunities to NDC teams.
Most importantly we thank our teams for sticking with us through this tough time. Please accept our personal apologies for the chaos since the storm and our pledge to keep working as hard as possible to get you back on the water and training hard ASAP!

This past Thursday’s (April 28th) storm gave all the clubs along the waterfront a real wallop. Numerous NDC dragonboats have been lost or damaged beyond repair and a number are still awaiting disposition.
National Dragonboat Club, in partnership with GWN, Kahlua Boats and Kropf Docks is working through the process of rebuilding our capacity. At this time we are back up and running with a fleet of loaned boats so all practices are back up as scheduled.
In the mean-time our office has been overwhelmed with the increased workload so we ask teams and individuals to please bear with us as we work through the delicate process of rebuilding your club. If you have any questions or concerns please know that we’re working on answering them.
Many thanks to all the individuals who have offered assistance and an especially big thanks goes GWN and Khalua for ensuring there is a fleet to practice in!
