This past weekend National Dragonboat Club entered the first ever NDC Junior Men’s 1,000m War Canoe crew in the CanoeKayak Canada Nationals at the Welland International Flatwater Centre placing 5th of 9 crews. The crew was comprised of men from a variety of paddling backgrounds and coxed by NDC’s Coach, Conor Fleming. The crew practiced less than ten times and managed to improve our 1,000m time from 4:45 to 4:18 over the course of 3 weeks. This endeavour is a true indication of the skills and power of NDC athletes.
With a number of hardend crews on the start line NDC’s goal was to stay in their lane and clear of the wash from the leading crews. With a terrific start and consistent power the NDC crew was able to keep up with the competition for a 5th place finish earning NDC 5 points towards the national championship.
NDC’s 5 points placed us 32nd of 42 competing clubs. Not a bad showing for our first time out and definitely something to improve upon. If you’re interested in becoming a part of NDC’s growing sprint program stay tuned to the blog or please let us know!

As well, she’ll need a new deck and some work to the gunwhales. If you’re interested in helping out with this project please let us know.
