This past weekend National Dragonboat Club entered the first ever NDC Junior Men’s 1,000m War Canoe crew in the CanoeKayak Canada Nationals at the Welland International Flatwater Centre placing 5th of 9 crews. The crew was comprised of men from a variety of paddling backgrounds and coxed by NDC’s Coach, Conor Fleming. The crew practiced less than ten times and managed to improve our 1,000m time from 4:45 to 4:18 over the course of 3 weeks. This endeavour is a true indication of the skills and power of NDC athletes.
With a number of hardend crews on the start line NDC’s goal was to stay in their lane and clear of the wash from the leading crews. With a terrific start and consistent power the NDC crew was able to keep up with the competition for a 5th place finish earning NDC 5 points towards the national championship.
NDC’s 5 points placed us 32nd of 42 competing clubs. Not a bad showing for our first time out and definitely something to improve upon. If you’re interested in becoming a part of NDC’s growing sprint program stay tuned to the blog or please let us know!

April 28th Storm Update
The windstorm that hit Toronto on April 28th was one of the worst in recent memory. The 100Km/h gusts were especially gruesome on the waterfront for the dragonboats, motorboats and docks.
NDC staff are currently working with our insurers to repair or replace the majority of our boats and on-water equipment, the hope is to be back to normal operations and fully self sufficient within a month. In the mean-time a HUGE thank you goes out to Great White North Dragon Boat, who generously granted us the use of six BUK dragonboats to assist the club through this ordeal. National Dragonboat Club would also like to thank Pickering Dragon Boat Club and Mississauga Canoe Club for offering their facilities to help provide uninterrupted practice opportunities to NDC teams.
Most importantly we thank our teams for sticking with us through this tough time. Please accept our personal apologies for the chaos since the storm and our pledge to keep working as hard as possible to get you back on the water and training hard ASAP!

Registration and Payment
Before beginning practices all teams training with NDC are required to have their accounts paid in full and in good standing. Most teams have followed the payment guidelines but there are teams out there that are still unpaid. Any unpaid practices are considered available to other crews and teams who haven’t paid run the risk of losing their practice slots to teams offering payment. If you haven’t already, please forward your payment by cash, cheque or credit card via paypal to lock-in your practice times.
2011 Spring/Summer Registration begins with membership December 1st, 2010
The NDC office has been receiving requests from anxious team captains interested in booking training times for their teams in 2011. As of December 1st, registration for 2011 is open to NDC Member teams. Registration for non-member teams will begin February 1st.
NDC Membership has benefits that any crew can appreciate. The number one quoted benefit is the chance to be first to select your ideal practice time for 2011. Other teams that will benefit from membership train often or take on NDC coaching, both of which are discounted through membership. Large teams or groups requiring club level support will benefit from the NDC’s organizational structure. For paddlers looking for extra workouts, crew membership brings free practices with the NDC Rec Crew; use these practices to brush up on technique or to guarantee a solid workout each week.
7:00 P.M. is always a favourite among crews so to even the balance the $15 premium paid for all practices at 7:00 or 7:30 P.M will remain in effect.
Non-Member teams wishing to register for practices a-la-carte can do so starting February 1st.

PRACTICE ISN’T OVER@!
TORONTO Island Regatta is only the beginning of the season for National Dragonboat Club. There’s still plenty of racing to be had and we’ve got to keep our name in high regard. Next on the agenda for big races is DBC Nationals in Whistler at the beginning of July followed by the always exciting trip to Montreal at the end of July. At the beginning of August we’ve got the IDBF Club-Crew World Championships (CCWC) in Macau, China. The following week NDC hosts its own home regatta the Toronto Cup on August 14th at Marilyn Bell Park. In the last week of August, NDC will be represented at the International Canoe Federation Dragonboat World Championships in Szeged, Hungary. Last on the Calendar of major events is the GWN Challenge over Sept. 11-12. Put simply, there’s still lots of work to do. TRAIN HARD.
